In chemical plants, gas operations, and refinery facilities, these types of packing have been used for processes such as fractionation and absorption. Although every manufacturer’s experience with random tower packing may be different, some perks and drawbacks remain stable for most users. Random tower packings can lower the pressure drop through a whole column. They can also manage liquid holdup. Finally, they may be able to expand capacity if you compare the capacity of trays at a comparable efficiency.

Alternatives to randomly packed towers include tray or plate towers. These towers may be less efficient. They might also have higher levels of pressure, which can make using them more difficult. For lower liquid rates and solids at chemical plants, plate trays may be more advantageous. Still, you’ll have to consider what your chemical plant processes and how you intend to services in the plant over time to decide on a type of tower.
